Scientists Crack the Aging Code - How it Can Help You Age Younger Now
Imagine living to be over 100 years old and living exactly the same way you did when you were in your 30s. Playing tennis, bowling, actively enjoying your great-grandchildren, engaged in all aspects of a vital and healthy life. Envision not having to worry about age-related diseases and decline such as: heart disease, cancer, poor eyesight, joint pain and much more. You do not have to worry any longer: Science has cracked the aging code.
What is a Telomere?
Modern science has made a surprising discovery: There is a process that occurs in our bodies each time our cells divide and this complex process involves Telomeres. Telomeres (Greek for "end part") are protective "caps" at the tips of chromosomes. These chromosomes that the telomeres protect from damage contain all of our genetic material. The telomeres can be compared to the little plastic caps on the ends of your shoelaces - without these caps the 'laces' will unravel.
How does a Telomere work?
We all know our cells divide into two to maintain and repair the body. When we were young our cell division created little change in the integrity of the cell. After about the age of 28, our cell division slows down and thereafter,each cell division changes the cell: Each newly divided cell is not the exact cell you were born with. With each division, the telomeres or "caps" get shorter and shorter over time creating the aging body that is susceptible to aging diseases and decline such as heart disease, arthritis, cancer, wrinkled skin, flaccid muscles and more. This process occurs continuously throughout our lives until eventually they reach what is called the "Hayflick Limit", the point at which the telomeres have shortened and can no longer protect the chromosomes from damage. Once they get too short, the cells cannot divide and we die.
Can we slow down the aging process?
A resounding YES! Scientists have discovered what helps maintain your telomere length and what grows your telomeres longer. By maintaining the integrity of the chromosome, the cell is able to continue living and dividing. Homocysteine is an amino acid that accumulates int the blood. It is a by-product of cell metabolism that can wreak havoc on your body by causing inflammation. Inflammation puts you at risk for many age-related diseases. Remember, inflammation indicates shorter telomere caps. Research shows that people with the highest homocysteine levels had 3 times less telomere length than those with low levels of homocysteine.
To help prevent the shortening of your telomeres - keep homocysteine levels low. To do this it is important to exercise regularly and engage in other healthful lifestyle choices. Abundant research shows that people who exercise 3 hours a week have longer telomeres (due to the suppression of the inflammatory response) than those who are 10 years younger.
Research shows supplements are a vital part of lengthening telomeres. Vitamin D3 (1,000 IU*) seems to reduce the risk of every killer disease of aging. Vitamin D3 is a potent inhibitor of the inflammatory response and thus, slows or reverses aging.
Recent research has shown that just using a daily Mulivitamin alone can lengthen your telomeres by nearly 5.1% - this equates to roughly 9.8 additional years of life. A multivitamin helps by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation.
Here is a partial list of vitamins that lower or prevent high homocysteine (inflammation):
* Vitamin B12 - 500 mcg*
* Vitamin B6 - 50 mg*
* Folic Acid - 400 mcg*
* Riboflavin (B2) - 25 mg*
* Vitamin C - 1,000 mg*.
* Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) - 400 IU*
* TMG (Trimethylglycine) - 500 mg*
*The above are daily amounts.
Healthful lifestyle choices are extremely important in maintaining and lengthening your telomeres. Exercise, reduce stress, choose brightly-colored, antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies as well as complex carbohydrates, drink a minimum of eight 8 oz glasses of water each day, use supplements as needed, minimize alcohol, stop smoking and lower sugar intake.
These are just a few of the fundamental areas you must address in order to create optimal health and a long life. By choosing to lower inflammation and thus, lengthen your telomeres, you are choosing to be proactive about your health.
